Although mental health assessment and treatment can bring about desired changes, this cannot be guaranteed and there are some risks involved. These may include an increased awareness of unpleasant physical symptoms, negative feelings and thoughts, and/or self-defeating behaviors. These may be a normal part of the treatment process; however, it’s important for you and your therapist to discuss any such reactions or experiences. It is also important that you discuss your reactions to medications, including any side effects and/or difficulties taking them properly. This will help your therapist coordinate treatment efforts with your physician.
